Text-to-Pay for Medical Practices: A Simple Guide

How text-to-pay works, why patients like it, and how to roll it out at your front desk.

Text-to-pay lets your practice send a patient a secure payment link by text message. The patient taps the link, pays from their phone and is done in under a minute, with no portal password and no phone call during business hours.

How it works with Clover PracticePay

  1. Your staff selects the patient and chooses Text-to-Pay.
  2. The patient receives a text with a secure link and the amount due.
  3. They pay with a card, HSA/FSA card or mobile wallet.
  4. The payment posts back to the patient's account in your PMS automatically.

When to use it

  • After insurance adjudication, for the patient's remaining responsibility
  • For telehealth visits, where there's no card to tap
  • For no-shows or forgotten copays
  • For estimates or deposits before larger procedures

Tips for a smooth rollout

  • Confirm mobile numbers at check-in and ask patients for consent to receive texts.
  • Keep messages short and clearly from your practice.
  • Send requests promptly once the balance is known.
  • Pair text-to-pay with payment plans for larger balances.
  • Review text-to-pay reports weekly to see what's been paid.

Is it secure?

Yes. Patients pay on a secure payment page, and PracticePay is a HIPAA-compliant platform. Card numbers are never sent by text or stored in your PMS.
